Assorted Links

1. On Engineers vs. Scientists. TL;DR: Practical experimentation is underrated.

2. Fantastic news in Portugal. Recovery will not begin until countries leave the Euro.

3. Scary stuff on overfishing. More here. I’d say a dozen attack subs going around sinking fishing ships would solve the problem quite nicely. If moose overgraze, get some wolves.

4. There is no great stagnation.

5 Quite droll article by the Economist on Buzzfeed.

Thanks for the link. I didn’t even mention most of the “scary” details from the book, like the specific comparisons of huge catches from centuries ago to smaller catches today, or the pattern known as “fishing down the food chain.” The next few decades will certainly be interesting.

I probably should add an alarmist source as well. One interesting thing is just how much smaller fish are today than they were 100 years ago. They are evolving to having a shorter lifecycle.

Yes this book mentioned that as well, though not so much evolution per se as simply fishing so much that the populations don’t make it to older ages, which has terribly compounding selection effects.
