I Despise “Awareness”

October 23, 2012

Thursday, October 25th is Breast Cancer Awareness day. If you are not aware that breast cancer exists, and that it is bad, you must have been living in a cave for the past half a century. Seriously, no one is like “oh yeah, breast cancer, it’s great!”. So when I see the marathons and the pink ribbons, all I can think of is opportunity cost. If all the money that is spent on these stupid publicity stunts were instead spent on research, breast cancer could have been cured by now! Instead of giving approbation to those who raise awareness, scorn them unless they have something to show for their efforts. Instead of giving money to a non-profit which spends all of its money on bumper stickers, forget awareness and give to an organization that addresses the underlying problem.

P.S.: I guess I’m just increasing awareness of anti-awareness, so I’m just as much a part of the problem. 😦
